Facial expressions are
universal and innate while having the ability to share private and inner
emotions that cannot be shown through verbal communication. Not only can humans
make them, but also many animals, which makes this concept unique and special to
me. I have always been intrigued by the fact that body language is able to say
more than words. My intention is for the viewer to feel and relate to the
emotion that is sensed in the drawing. The question that needs to be answered
when regarding each piece of artwork is, “Why does that expression make me feel
this way?”
Focusing on the face keeps the viewer’s primary center of attention on the emotions that are conveyed in my drawings. Using a square picture plane helps to balance the drawing and keep the focal point in the center. I decided to shave my charcoal into a container and paint with it instead of using a charcoal pencil to create my artwork. This allows the individual to appear smooth and give the illusion of looking at a real person. One of my main goals of my art is to make the viewer feel as if they are having a conversation with the drawing. All of this is able to emphasize the emotions that I want to be felt by each work of art.
